Okay, many of my posts have been about how to save money on grocery shopping. Well, lately I’ve been trying a different experiment: How to NOT grocery shop.
That’s right, I haven’t been to the grocery store in more than a week, though my husband did have to pop over to the corner store for a jug of milk.
How have I fed a family of four without going to the store? I simply used what I already had.
For example, we were almost out of bread, so I made some with the ingredients I had in my pantry. Here’s my recipe:
Easy Yeast Bread Recipe
- 3 cups lukewarm water
- 2/14 teaspoon yeast
- 6 cups whole wheat flour
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- Mix the ingredients together, in order.
- Let the dough sit in its bowl for 5 minutes.
- Knead the dough.
- Let it sit with a towel over it to hold in the heat until it doubles.
- Kneed it into a loaf.
- Put in a greased pan and bake at 350 degrees for around 30 minutes or until the top is golden.
Another problem I came across was that we needed some healthy breakfast cereal. I had oatmeal, sugar-free syrup and peanut butter. Bingo! I made some homemade granola cereal using the recipe my mother taught me when I was a kid.
Homemade Peanut Butter Granola Recipe
- 1 cup peanut butter
- 3 cups oatmeal
- 1 cup syrup (it can be corn syrup, sugar-free or regular maple)
- Nuts, raisins, dried fruit (optional)
- Mix all of the ingredients together in a large bowl using your hands.
- Plop pieces of the mixture onto a greased cookie sheet.
- Bake at 350 degrees for around 15 minutes or until the granola turns a darker color.
