Best Places To Go Thrift Shopping 2023

Some cities are better than others when it comes to finding the best places to go thrift shopping. To mark National Thrift Shop Day on Aug. 17, Lawn Love ranked 2023’s Best Cities for Thrifting.

They compared the 200 biggest U.S. cities based on five categories. Did your city make the list?

Best Places to Go Thrift Shopping

The Thrifting Empire of New York: New York is the thrifting champ, sitting in 1st place with the highest number of flea markets (37) and thrift stores (91). That’s 33 more than Houston! NYC is also rocking the most clothing swap groups, even tied with LA.

California’s Consignment Capital, Los Angeles: LA jumps to 2nd place, just a smidge behind New York. But it’s a hotspot for high-end labels with a whopping 301 consignment shops. If estate sales and Goodwill boutiques are your thing, LA’s the place to be.

Thriftin’ in the Texas Triangle: Houston, San Antonio, Austin, and now Dallas are making waves in the top 10 for thrifting. From thrift stores to consignment shops and estate sales, Texas is where it’s at. Houston’s even got the most Habitat for Humanity ReStores.

Lacking in Sustainable Options: Lakewood, Thornton, and Ontario, California are falling behind, ranking way down in the 175-190 range. Despite a love for thrifting, these cities are starved for secondhand shops. Time to step up the game there!

Houston’s Bulk Buying Bonanza: Resellers, look no further! Houston’s the king of Goodwill Outlets, leading the pack with Indy, Sacramento, and Santa Ana trailing behind. It’s a goldmine for upcycling or reselling.

Being Picky with Secondhand: Some big cities like San Francisco, Washington, and Boston are letting thrifters down when it comes to easy access. But don’t write off SF just yet! They’ve got the 8th-highest number of consignment shops, plus loads of clothing swap groups.

So, whether you’re a seasoned thrifter or new to the game, there’s a city out there that’s just right for your secondhand shopping style!
